Cattedrale of San Lorenzo

Built in the XV Century as a replacement for the earlier Romanesque cathedral, it is situated in an area considered sacred since the archaic age, as testified by the several layers which were recently discovered. 
 
The façade is characterised by a baroque portal by Pietro Carattoli (1729) while the side features a XVI Century portal by Galeazzo Alessi. The interior has the characteristic structure of gothic cathedrals with naves of the same height (Hallekirche). The vaults have frescos dating back to the XVIII Century. Inside the cathedral there are significant art works like "la Deposizione" by Federico Barocci (1569) and “la Madonna delle Grazie” by G. Di Paolo.

The fine reliquary of the Santo Anello (or Madonna’s wedding ring) is considered among the masterpieces of Renaissance goldsmithing. This is kept in the chapel of San Giuseppe, where Perugino painted the famous "Sposalizio della Vergine” (1501-1504), today at Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, France. In its stead today a 1825 painting by Gian Battista Wicar.

The sacristy houses a cycle of paintings of the Martirio di San Lorenzo by Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi (1573-76), an example of illusionist baroque painting.
